Artist Statement
Marinta Skupin combines imagery, writing, and other forms of visualization in order to explore multiple ways of knowing and of expressing the world. Among the media she uses are painting, drawing, and digital media.
She often overlays references to scientific data onto landscape imagery, alluding to the role that knowledge systems play in our experience of the world and in our understanding of that experience.
Her work is informed by physical features of the natural world, as well as by her reflections on the history of landscape painting and on issues such as extinction and the climate crisis.
Language is central to Skupin’s work. She has been intrigued by the role of Afrikaans, her mother tongue, in the shaping of her consciousness. Contemplating the concept of loss, she considers how the loss of one’s language could extend to the loss of the world.
